When I first read the Apostolic Fathers during the late 80s, my then-fundamentalist mind was scandalized by this one particular notion. And once I had read it stated explicitly, I then saw how often it is present as an assumption underlying some other argument. The notion was this, that the way to assure that one is holding to the truth (that one is orthodox) is by being obedient to one's bishop. Not by going to my prayer closet and keeping my nose stuck in Scripture, but by submitting my intellect to someone else. And to find the idea so early in the writings of the Church! Yeeouch!
